Tune-up race scratched owing to lack of wind

"Today I have tried something for the very first time. The first 15-20 minutes in a storm with 12 m/second. We considered sailing only with our foresail, but then the wind dropped completely and the race had to be abandoned," Flemming Fjord tells us from Lake Constance.

The judge managed to get two races going on the first day of the World Championship, but neither of them could be completed. Late in the afternoon, after four start attempts, the judge gave up. To complete a World Championship four races have to be sailed - and they all count. If there are five or more races, the poorest result can be deducted. The World Championship races can continue up to and including Saturday.

When the wind finally came, it changed up to 180 degrees in direction, so many of the teams used their spinnakers up towards the top mark. Normally, the spinnaker is used when running before the wind on the way down to the bottom mark. "The conditions are well-nigh impossible," said Flemming Fjord when Team VELUX got in at 18.30 on Monday. "It is a bit like taking part in a lottery." But the team's spirits are still high, and the will to sail to win is still there, of course.

It is raining and there is still no wind this Tuesday morning, so far the sailors have to stay ashore.
